Bright Future of Deep-Ultraviolet Photonics

NTU LUMINOUS! researchers Dr Vijay Kumar Sharma and Prof Hilmi Volkan Demir have recently published an informative and exhaustive review entitled “Bright Future of Deep-Ultraviolet Photonics: Emerging UVC Chip-Scale Light-Source Technology Platforms, Benchmarking, Challenges, and Outlook for UV Disinfection” in ACS Photonics 2022, 9, 1513–1521. This perspective gives a competitive overview of the current state-of-the-art UV technologies (mercury lamps, excimer lamps, UVC LEDs, and CL-based DUV chips) based on their optical performance, compactness, temperature stability, lifetime, environment friendliness, germicidal efficacy, and most importantly the cost and discussed their merits and demerits with oversight of challenges and prospects.
