The Joint NTU-UBC Research Centre of Excellence in Active Living for the Elderly (LILY) is a world-class research centre focused in the design of computing technologies that help the elderly enjoy an active and independent lifestyle.

Established with support from the Interactive Digital Media Programme Office (IDMPO), National Research Foundation (NRF), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and The University of British Columbia (UBC), LILY aims to be one of the world’s first incubators of inter-disciplinary research ideas in its field, and to establish Singapore as a hub in designing and building technology-enabled, age-friendly communities.

LILY’s research results are being applied in societally impactful ways. Through cutting-edge human-centred AI research - including curious AI, persuasive AI, explainable AI, and crowd AI - LILY has developed an ecosystem of humanized AI-powered platforms to help aging societies become “ageless”. Since our establishment, LILY has been striving to address key problems faced by seniors and the ageing society, including research topics related to dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, frailty, rehabilitation, general wellbeing, and quality of life. 

PhD Programmes

We offer two programmes, the IGP PhD Programme to conduct interdisciplinary research to improve the quality of life of the elderly Programme and the NTU-UBC Joint PhD Programme that allows doctoral students to undertake their PhD studies either at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada or at NTU, Singapore in collaboration with the other university.
