Transboundary Haze Risk on the Rise: What Singapore Should Know

CCEH Director Prof. Steve Yim speaks to CNA on how El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole are shaping the haze outlook for June–October 2026

Prof. Steve Yim, Director of the Centre for Climate, Environment and Health (CCEH), was interviewed on CNA on 30 May 2026 to discuss the elevated risk of transboundary haze affecting Singapore from June to October 2026. Drawing on the latest climate signals, Prof. Yim explained how the concurrent influence of El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole is expected to bring drier-than-normal conditions across Southeast Asia, conditions that historically increase the likelihood of land and forest fires in the region, and the subsequent smoke and haze that can affect Singapore's air quality.

Prof. Yim highlighted that while seasonal haze is not new to Singapore, the compounding effect of these two climate phenomena warrants heightened public awareness and preparedness. He discussed the importance of monitoring air quality indices, taking precautionary health measures, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions and the broader need for regional cooperation to address the root causes of transboundary haze.
