Spotlight: Heat and Pollution Kill—Our Work Featured in GeoHealth

New research highlights nearly 700,000 premature deaths linked to heat and PM2.5—80% in the Global South.

We’re proud to share that our recent research has been published in GeoHealth and featured by EOS News. The study examines the deadly overlap of heatwaves and PM2.5 pollution, revealing an estimated 694,440 premature deaths from 1990 to 2019—with over 80% in the Global South. India recorded the highest mortality burden, followed by China and Nigeria. Despite emission control efforts, the frequency of Hot and Polluted Episodes (HPEs) continues to rise globally, including in the Global North. As heatwaves and pollution levels intensify with climate change, our study reinforces the critical need for equitable global policy, environmental justice, and targeted interventions—especially in the Global South.
