CCEH Seminar on Advancing Numerical Weather Modeling and Climate Prediction
Engaging academic exchange with Prof Seonki Park on on model optimisation, extreme weather prediction, and international collaboration
The Centre for Climate Change & Environmental Health (CCEH) at Nanyang Technological University hosted a seminar and discussion session by Seonki Park, Professor at Ewha Womans University, on 8 January 2026, as part of his academic visit to NTU.
Professor Park is a leading expert in numerical weather and climate prediction, with extensive experience in coupled atmosphere–land–chemistry modelling, data assimilation, and parameter optimisation. His seminar, titled “Opti-parameterization: Sequential Optimization of Parameterization Schemes and Parameters in Numerical Climate/Weather Prediction Models,” highlighted recent advances in improving predictive skill for high-impact weather and climate applications.
The session comprised a focused research presentation followed by an active and engaging discussion with faculty members, researchers, and students from CCEH, the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), and related research groups across NTU. Discussions centred on numerical modelling uncertainties, challenges in extreme weather prediction, and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration linking atmospheric science, climate modelling, and environmental health.
The seminar formed part of Professor Park’s broader academic visit to NTU, hosted by CCEH, which aimed to strengthen research linkages between Singapore and Korea. Discussions during the visit also explored potential future collaborations, joint research proposals, and opportunities for graduate-level academic and research exchange. CCEH thanks Professor Park for his visit and for the stimulating exchange of ideas and looks forward to continued engagement and collaboration in advancing numerical weather and climate research.
