About the Centre for Asian Art and Design

caad9

The Centre for Asian Art and Design (CAAD) is a transdisciplinary research centre dedicated to innovative creative practice and scholarship across design art and media art in Asia. Working at the intersection of culture, technology and art, the Centre brings together artist practitioners, researchers, technologists and industry to consider contemporary problems through which creative inquiry may address.

CAAD's research is organised around three interconnected areas:

Asian Futures investigates the preservation, reinterpretation and continued evolution of Asia's tangible and intangible cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on Southeast Asia's diverse artistic traditions and narrative ecosystems.

Technologies for Art explores contemporary artistic production in visual communication, time-based media, narrative practice, immersive environments and artistic image-making, with the advent with emerging creative technologies such as automation, advanced computing and artificial intelligence, to push the boundaries of creative expression.

Entangled Ecologies examines how artistic practice may address contemporary issues such as climate change, cultural erosion, and social transformation amidst complex environmental challenges.

The Centre serves as an important platform for faculty research, local and international collaborations, pioneering exhibitions and public programmes that connect scholarship with industry, cultural partners and the wider community. By cultivating open spaces for dialogue, CAAD seeks to contribute to the development of new knowledge, creative innovation and meaningful cultural exchange throughout the region and beyond.
