Singapore Max Planck Alliance for Sustainable Chemical Conversion of Biomass

The Singapore Max Planck Alliance brings together the Max Planck Society and leading Singapore partners to develop joint research programmes and long-term scientific collaboration.

This programme targets emissions reductions on dual fronts: aviation fuel demand and biomass disposal, by enabling sustainable feedstock utilisation and circular biomass valorisation. Beyond jet fuels, SCCB will advance carbon-reduction pathways that strengthen Singapore’s energy resilience and broaden decarbonisation efforts.

This is a joint research initiative between the Max Planck Society (MPS), represented by MPICI (https://www.mpikg.mpg.de/en) and MPICEC (https://www.cec.mpg.de/en), and its Singapore partner institutions – Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS).

This research project (SCCB) is part of the CREATE Thematic Programme in Decarbonisation and is supported by the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore under its Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) programme.

Mission and Vision

SCCB aims to harness regional high-volume low-value resources for the production of aviation fuels and platform chemicals.

The complex endeavour builds on three pillars:

  • Improved fractionation: We aim to design solvent systems with improved fractionation ability.
  • Better catalysts: We work at developing and benchmarking highly selective catalysts with long-term stability for the upgrading of biomass derived streams.
  • Accelerated Scale-up: We combine experimental data with physics-informed machine learning to accelerate and derisk scale-up.
