About the Seminar

Electrification for Sustainable Marine Transport: Technologies, Systems, and Control

Shipping is undergoing a profound transformation toward decarbonization, and electrification has emerged as a key enabler, offering higher energy efficiency, lower emissions, and greater operational flexibility. This seminar provides a system-level overview of marine electrification, structured around three themes: technologies, including batteries, hybrid power systems, and shore charging; systems, covering how these are integrated onboard and connected with port energy infrastructure; and control, showing how smart control and energy management turn them into efficient and reliable operations.

Drawing on research at NTNU, selected data-driven case studies show how design and control choices affect fuel consumption and emissions. The seminar concludes with an outlook on open challenges and research opportunities in the transition toward zero-emission shipping.

About the Speaker

Professor Mehdi Zadeh, Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Mehdi Zadeh (Senior Member, IEEE) is a Professor of Hybrid Energy Systems in the Department of Marine Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway, and Director of the Marine Electrification Research Laboratory. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from NTNU in 2016. Prior to rejoining NTNU as a faculty member in 2017, he worked in the power electronics industry, where he contributed to the development of battery charging systems for electric vehicles.

He has served as principal investigator in Horizon Europe projects under the Zero Emission Waterborne Transport Partnership and leads research on integration and control in MarTrans, Norway's national research centre for maritime energy transition. His research interests include electrification for zero-emission and autonomous marine transport, onboard and hybrid DC power systems, offshore renewable energy systems, and smart sustainable ports. He serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification.
