Gil Opina Jr is the Programme Director at the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N). Gil heads the Autonomous Vehicle (AV) group within the Future Mobility Systems programme. He has conducted pioneering work on autonomous vehicles in Singapore with more than 8 years of extensive focus on research and development on different hardware sensors, computing, and software control algorithms. The AV team has developed a commercial-ready AV controller kit system that can be implemented across different vehicle platforms. Currently, the group has converted different utility vehicle platforms and two 12m 40-seater full electric bus from manually driven vehicles into a full autonomous vehicle within a span of 18 months.

Gil has also co-founded a start-up that is working to revolutionise the energy grid and transport system with cutting-edge technological works on digitalisation, automation, electrification and connectivity.

Gil has been in RD&D for more than 20 years and accumulated vast experiences working across global companies. His previous job stints included Artesyn, Pulse, and Vestas where he created different power supply and controller platform for the power and energy market. Most of the products he developed have been fully commercialised and are still being produced globally. He later joined Siemens and ABB to provide technical solutions for conventional and renewable energy markets.

Gil has more than 10 patents filed in the power, electromagnetics and controller domain. He recently filed seven more IPs in the area of autonomous vehicle systems and electro mobility.  Gil holds an MSc in Power Engineering (2007 – 2009) from NTU (Singapore) and a BSc. in Electronics and Communications Engineering (1992 – 1996) from Mapua Institute of Technology (Philippines).
