NTU College of Engineering Featured in Energy Market Authority (EMA) Video Showcase at Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2020

A research team led by Professor Wen Yonggang, Associate Dean (Research), College of Engineering was featured in an EMA video showcase at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2020 (video link here). Prof Wen’s solution of optimising energy consumption in Singapore’s data centres through digitalisation was one of 4 teams featured in this video which demonstrated how the industry and research community have been working together to co-create innovative digital solutions for smarter use of energy as well as greater efficiency and reliability.

As a growing hub for data centres, Singapore is projected to see its data centre energy consumption increase by 2030. Managing energy demand and supporting this industry sector without compromising Singapore’s carbon footprint is thus of paramount importance. Prof Wen’s DCWiz solution is developed to address this challenge. The solution integrates advanced intelligent algorithms that are able to quickly pinpoint hotspots and bottlenecks, and target cooling capacity at specific spots to achieve energy efficiency, without compromising the reliability and safety of the data centre. Funded initially by EMA, the team were able to develop this energy saving solution for green data centres in Singapore. The technology has also been commercialised via a spin-off company, Red Dot Analytics, which strives to digitalise, optimise and automate data center operations and management via AI algorithms for energy efficiency.
