The English Language and Literature (ELL) Academic Group is committed to high-quality research and innovative teaching in the areas of English language and linguistics, literature, and English teacher education. We have a strong team of highly dedicated faculty members engaged in cutting-edge disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and education research, committed to bringing theoretically-robust and practice-relevant perspectives to our classrooms. Our research culture embraces the diverse academic interests of our faculty and students, and the vision for our teaching is shaped by our mission to develop critically-engaged, socially-responsible, knowledgeable, and passionate individuals and English teachers for the 21st century. As an academic department within an institution devoted to teacher education, a key thrust of ELL is to develop impactful research and teaching in partnership with schools and teachers.

We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Our flagship coursework programmes are the four-year direct honours Bachelor of Arts in Double Major Degree programme, the 16-month Postgraduate Diploma in Education, the Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics), and the Master of Education (English). Research degrees that can be undertaken with us include the Master of Arts (Research) and the Doctor of Philosophy. We also offer professional development courses for English language and literature teachers, and Teachers’ Language Development (TLD) courses that help student teachers develop the English language and communication skills they need for their studies and for their teaching careers.

Across all our programmes and courses, we endeavour to provide a supportive space for our students to critically engage with pertinent issues and to grow in their competencies. Our classes tend to be interactive and reflective of 21st century pedagogies, with experiential, authentic, place-based, collaborative, and technology-enabled learning featuring in many of our courses. We believe our students are an integral part of the character of ELL, and deeply value the interesting mix of students that we have as well as the diverse experiences that they bring with them to ELL.

With over forty faculty members, we have an exceptional breadth of areas of research and study represented in our academic group. We invite you to discover more about what we do in ELL by exploring the rest of our website.
