Through personal observations, anecdotes and lived experiences as seen through the lens of a Punjabi-Sikh, this talk will examine the concept of diversity in Singapore, explored through themes such as in and out groups, media representation and tokenism. It will touch upon the speaker’s motivation for publishing an illustrated children’s book whose central character is an ethnic minority who is adjusting to the complexities of school life. The talk will also seek to explain the positive impact social inclusion has on enhancing group dynamics and overall cohesion.

Sandeep Singh is a Singaporean creative and author of Punjabi-Sikh themed children's book - Aman Goes to School. Seeing a gap in children's stories in the Punjabi-Sikh/North Indian community in Singapore, Sandeep embarked on this project to provide younger readers with more local representation and relatable characters.
