SCSE Student Competition Team Advanced to AWS Hackdays 2020 Finals

The Amazon Web Services (AWS Hackdays) Online 2020 final was held online on 10th Aug 2020. AWS Hackdays: Build Tomorrow!, is a hackathon for South-East Asian Developers who are keen to shape the future. This year’s competition focuses on the acceleration of digitalisation in South-East Asia by leveraging on Amazon Web Services Tools.

Participants can compete in the 4 categories:

  • Sustainability
  • Learning and Development
  • Automation
  • Security

The SCSE Team Forecasters were the only team from the tertiary comprising of first year students among the top 5 finalist teams. They range from senior software engineers from Facebook, Goldman Sachs and SalesForce.

The team discovered that they could accurately predict gene mutations for the influenza virus through an attention-based neural network, developed by NTU researchers as well. Combining this state-of-the-art method with statistical methods from other papers, they have managed to simulate strain evolutions and their associated pandemic risks.

AWS Hackdays: Build Tomorrow!, is a hackathon for South-East Asian Developers who are keen to shape the future.
