SCSE PhD student Mr Mathieu Ravaut has been awarded a Singapore Data Science Consortium (SDSC) PhD Dissertation Research Fellowship 2022. The SDSC PhD Fellowship is a yearly award which is attributed to at most 10 PhD students from Singapore autonomous universities. Students have to be conducting research in data science involving real-life datasets, and have demonstrated successful outcomes in their research.

Mr Mathieu Ravaut is a third-year PhD student under the supervision of A/P Shafiq Joty and A/P Sun Aixin at NTU SCSE, and Dr Nancy Chen at A-STAR I2R. His research focuses on abstractive summarization, which is the task of training neural networks to synthesize and re-write a block of text (e.g, a news article) into a shorter, highly informative summary. Specifically, Mathieu has been doing research on models processing entire summary candidates, which make existing summarization models more useful. His research has been published at top-tier NLP conferences ACL 2022 (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2203.06569.pdf) and EMNLP 2022 (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.08779.pdf), with several other papers under review.
