NTU Team won the Competition Overall Runner Up and the Best Poster award in the Student Cluster Competition at SC22.

Our NTU High Performance Computing (NTUHPC) team, Supernova has won the second place and the Best Poster award in the student cluster competition (SCC) at SC22. The SCC was held in Dallas, Texas from 14 to 16 November 2022.

After nearly three-year lockdown, our NTU team is back to the SCC in-person. The team comprising of students from various undergraduate programmes from the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE).  In this year, the SCC has invited ten teams to Dallas and three teams to compete virtually. "We are not only working on the cloud-based HPC resources but also bring our own nodes to compete with the other nine teams from Switzerland, Germany, Taiwan and the U.S.A." says advisor Dr Loke Yuan Ren, SCSE Lecturer.

After setting up our hardware, four benchmarks run on the first day. There are HPL, HPCG, IO500 and MLPerf. Students are required to maximize their performance in each benchmark under the hardware constraints. In the following 48 hours, students are required to complete the tasks on two known applications and a mystery application. The mystery application is just revealed on the first day. Besides that, some works in a paper need to be reproduced with three additional tasks. In the last few hours, the team will be interviewed by a group of HPC experts on their work. It is an incredible demanding competition but our team did it.

The team is thankful for the guidance and support from Prof Francis Lee Bu-Sung, Dr Loke Yuan Ren, Mr Liu Siyuan, Mr Yang Shenghao, Dr James Chen Jen-Chang, Dr Jernej Zidar and Mr Terry Yin Jianxiong.

We also extend our sincere thanks to National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), Nvidia Corporation and ASUSTeK Computer Inc. for their generous support and sponsorship.
