Congratulations to Mr Jiang Liming (left) and Mr Nguyen Xuan Phi (right) for winning the 2021 Singapore Data Science Consortium (SDSC) Dissertation Research Fellowship!

The SDSC Dissertation Fellowship aims to promote and recognise innovative and impactful data science thesis work of PhD students. This annual programme will provide up to ten cash awards of S$10,000 for doctoral students at Singapore universities.

Mr Jiang Liming is supervised by Assoc Prof Loy Chen Change at MMLab@NTU and is currently in his Year 3 of PhD study. Liming’s PhD project is on image and video generation. He has published his PhD work in top conferences, including NeurIPS 2021, ICCV 2021, ECCV 2020 and CVPR 2020, in the field of machine learning and computer vision. Notably, his work on Adaptive Pseudo Augmentation and Focal Frequency Loss help training generative models with better synthesis quality yet with fewer data. Liming also co-organized DeeperForensics Challenge 2020 and OpenMMLab Workshop 2021

Mr Nguyen Xuan Phi is pursuing his third year of PhD study under the supervision of Asst Prof Shafiq Joty at NTU and Dr Wu Kui and Dr Aw Ai Ti at A*STAR. Phi’s research is about supervised, unsupervised and low-resource neural machine translation. He has published his PhD work in top machine learning and natural language processing conferences, such as ICLR 2020, NeurIPS 2020, ACL2020, ICML 2021, ACL 2021 and NAACL 2021. Particularly, his work on increasing synthetic data diversity by using ensembles of NMT models has advanced the state of the art in both supervised and unsupervised machine translation tasks. In addition, Phi also joined research internship programs at Salesforce AI Research and Facebook AI Research (FAIR).
