Biography

Received the M.Eng. and B.Eng degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in 2000 and 1997 respectively. After graduating, became part of the core software developer team for a start-up in San Mateo, California and developed middleware utilizing XML as the main source. Thereafter, received a 1-year training in grid computing at the Bioinformatics Institute of Singapore, Agency For Science, Technology And Research (A*STAR), Singapore sponsored by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and worked on code parallelization using message passing and multi-threading on computer clusters for cardiac arrhythmia modelling. Subsequently joined Nanyang Technological University for various research work that include: research and development of a laser-based fiber optic polarimetric instrument for online structural health monitoring; sequencing and analysis of human mitochondrial and Y-DNA to study the genetic diversity in Singapore (National Institute of Education); research and development of robotics technology for biomedical applications such as the Assistive Handheld Instrument for Microsurgery, Vision-Based Control of an Active Handheld Instrument for Microsurgery, Micro Motion Sensing System for measuring micrometer scale motion, Vision Guided Cell Micromanipulation for vision based micromanipulation of cells, Computer Vision Guided Automated Embryo Biopsy,  Automated Trophectoderm Biopsy for Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis; research and development of robotics technology for rehabilitation and assistive applications such as Pathological Tremor Modelling & Active Compensation via Functional Electrical Stimulations, Objective Assessment of Upper Extremity Function in Neurorehabilitation, Motivation Driven Stroke Rehabilitation via Bio-Signal Control System, Adaptive Balance Assistant for Daily Living. Current work surrounds the research and development of robotics (cognitive) technology such as the Intelligent Human-Robot Interfaces for Assistive Robots, Proof-Of-Concept, Proof-Of-Value and Test-Bedding in Smart Integrated Construction System and Robotics for Construction 4.0.
