Introduction

This course provides insights on theories of what is language, why language is important for an individual’s and nation’s overall development, and what is the in-depth meaning of language acquisition and language learning. Participants will be given case studies and scenarios to analyse and understand relevant concepts.

 

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the key meaning and the definition of the terms: language, Mother Tongue language, first language, second language, third language, heritage language and foreign language
  2. Understand and appreciate Singapore’s bilingual policy and its benefits to students in schools, community and the world
  3. Know how to value home MT language to sustain the identity, culture, values through speaking the language
  4. Develop their knowledge on the importance of teaching Tamil as a second language in Singapore

Topics covered:

  1. Definitions, explanation and an in-depth meaning of the terms: Language, Language Acquisition and Language Learning
  2. The link between Language acquisition and First Language, Second Language and Foreign Language
  3. What are the key features of a Mother Tongue Language and Language Acquisition?
  4. How a Language is important for an individual, for a multilingual society and for progressive national development
  5. Tamil Language Education and it’s contributions to Singapore
  6. Language use at home, school, classroom, community and workplace: Understanding the language learning theories and rationale through selected case studies

Working professionals with background and or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents:

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
