Introduction

This course provides the following insights:

  1. Understand the concepts of Language Acquisition, Language Learning, Theories in Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism
  2. Understand the background of Singapore's official languages, Non-Tamil Indian Languages
  3. Know the in-depth meaning of Teaching and Learning First, Second and Foreign Language.
  4. Prepare suitable content and interactive lessons to develop the students as confident speakers
  5. Understand the Linguistic Features of Standard Spoken Tamil and its development, and the Uses and Users in the Singapore context: education, media
  6. Understand the concept of Singapore Tamilians, and making Tamil as a Living Language

This course is mutually exclusive to MLT908A-C.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop an understanding of the terms and concepts: sociolinguistics and bilingualism.
  2. Define the terms in educational contexts: Monolingual, Bilingual, Multilingual, Additive Bilingualism and Subtractive bilingualism, Written Tamil, Standard Spoken Tamil.
  3. How to enact, evaluate and review the curriculum.

Topics covered:

  1. Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism
  2. Theories on Language acquisition and effective Language usage
  3. Development of language skills in students
  4. Creating content and language development lessons to students
  5. Tamil Language related Government, Community and Institutional efforts
  6. Tamil Language Use: Community Festivals, Speak Tamil Campaigns and community contributions: Culture and Heritage
  7. Tamil Language Usage Reviews and Recommendations

Working professionals with background and or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents:

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
