Introduction

This course includes evidence-based research studies, teaching and learning theories, learning strategies and development of language skills based on a holistic second language curriculum for Singapore. Tamil Language teaching involves textbooks, teaching materials and assessments. Currently the textbooks have been prepared by the Ministry of Education and it is recommended as the main source of teaching and learning in Tamil classes. The package of teaching materials comes with textbooks, workbooks, teaching materials. Student Learning Space provides useful online useful teaching materials. Every lesson has formative assessment. Teachers can develop additional assessments for learning, on learning and of learning.

Schools have summative assessments: at the end of their quarterly, half yearly and annually in the educational year. These assessment papers will provide additional practice work: Table of specimen and answer keys.

Apart from the recommended textbooks, workbooks and teaching materials, teachers have to review ample sources at the market.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Have an understanding of the teaching and learning of first language, second language, and mother tongue language and literacy.
  2. Learn the evolution of Tamil Language Reviews and various review processes and reports.
  3. Participants will be able to develop and design the following at the end of the course:
    • How to plan a customised syllabus for MT courses in Singapore and international contexts
    • How to enact, evaluate and review the curriculum

Topics covered:

  1. What it means to teach the Language and Literacy.
  2. Tamil Language research studies, reviews and reports (SINDA, TLCPRC, Mother Tongue Languages Review, NIE-CRPP Curriculum Review Report).
  3. Pedagogy of Tamil: Approaches to teaching Tamil Curriculum materials.
  4. Pedagogy of Tamil: Understand the use of formative, summative assessments in Tamil teaching assessment materials.
  5. Be able to plan a MT syllabus for school MT levels, for Mother Tongue Languages Department, MT for school and for school cluster.
  6. Curriculum Development: Develop MT teaching materials to prepare different MT Levels for the next cycle.

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
