Introduction
The course aims to cover the principles, goals and selection of a Tamil Language curriculum, teaching materials; and evaluation of IT related curriculum materials and assessment. This course also aims to strengthen participants’ curriculum knowledge pertaining to curriculum, syllabus, textbooks, teaching materials, planning and pre-preparation, enactment of the curriculum, fidelity in classroom teaching and assessment in the context of Teaching Tamil as a Second Language in Singapore.
This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education
- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education
- Master of Education in Tamil Language
Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):
- MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
- MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
- MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
- MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)
Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the definition and meaning, the place of curriculum
development, and its importance in the educational development
of the country (i.e. Singapore).
2. Understand curriculum theories and approaches (Tylor, 1949,
Walker, 1971, Dewey, 1938, Freire, 1970, Apple, 1979, Eisner,
1979, 1985, Bernstein, 1972 and Spiwak, 1985).
3. Understand the different types and models of curriculum and their
purpose in education.
4. Identify and discuss the links between planning, implementing
and evaluating a curriculum.
5. Understand Singapore’s bilingual policies in Singapore’s
education framework especially its significance in Tamil
education in Singapore.
To meet the requirement of SkillsFuture Singapore, assessment(s) will be conducted during every course. The assessment(s) include:
- Group Participation
- Individual Learning Portfolio
- Individual Reflection Paper
Working professionals with background and or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents:

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
