Introduction

The course will include the Principles, Goals and Selection of a Tamil Language Curriculum, Teaching materials; Evaluation of IT related Curriculum materials and Assessment.

Module focus: Evidence based Research Studies, Teaching and Learning Theories, learning strategies and Development of Language Skills based on a Holistic Second Language Curriculum for Singapore. The first objective is to introduce the concept of the Definition and Meaning of Curriculum and its importance in Educational Development of the Country (i.e. Singapore). The second objective of the course is to explain and map out the links between Planning, Implementing and Evaluating a Curriculum. The third objective is to plan a syllabus for class, level, Mother Tongue Languages department, school and school cluster. The fourth objective is to revise the curriculum to prepare for the next cycle.

This course is mutually exclusive to MTL901A-C.

- FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Tamil Language Education (12 AU):

  • MTL901 Tamil Curriculum, Materials including IT: Selection and Evaluation (or MTL901A-C)
  • MTL903 Tamil Language in Education (or MTL903A-C)
  • MTL907 History of Singapore Tamil Education and Tamil Literature (or MTL907A-C)
  • MTL908 An Introduction to Sociolinguistics and Bilingualism for Tamil (or MTL908A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Tamil Language Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a deeper understanding of the key theories on Curriculum, Curriculum models, Curriculum planning, implementing, evaluating and work for the next cycle.
  2. Understand the history of the Tamil language education, its developments in vernacular and bilingual education through the curriculum, syllabus, textbook, teaching materials and pedagogy.
  3. Able to plan for a curriculum for a state, school cluster, school, Mother Tongue Languages Department, level, class and a student.

Topics covered:

  1. Introduction to curriculum development and changes; rationale, history of Singapore curriculum.
  2. Theory and Practice of Curriculum Development.
  3. Classroom based Tamil research projects and curriculum.
  4. What should be counted as Knowledge and sources of knowledge (teachers, subject specialists, resource persons from society such as parents and community leaders).
  5. Curriculum Continuum: Planned Curriculum, enacted curriculum, experienced curriculum.
  6. Models: Research, Development and Diffusion.
  7. Students' right to have access to educational establishments/ equality of educational opportunity.
  8. Curriculum enactment and fidelity of Implementation.
  9. Approaches to Implementation: Action Research, Concern Based Adoption model.
  10. Purpose and approaches of Curriculum Evaluation.

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
