Introduction

It is important to understand the history of science reforms in order to make sense of current reforms. In this course, participants will learn about the history of science curriculum reforms in Singapore, U.S., and other countries. They will learn to unpack the sociohistorical, socioeconomic, sociopolitical and sociocultural macronarratives in science curriculum and policy documents.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Science Education (12 AU):

• MSC903 Science as Practice (or MSC903A-C)
• MSC904 Alternative Conceptions and Conceptual Change in Science Learning (or MSC904A-C)

• MSC906 Representations and New Media in Science Education (or MSC906A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth course, MSC902 Science Curriculum Change and Curriculum Evaluation (or MSC902A-C), learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Science Education (16 AU).

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse macronarratives in science curriculum reform documents.
  2. Articulate the diverse socio perspectives embedded in science curriculum and policy documents.
  3. Draw implications and connections between the macronarratives and science curriculum work.

Topics covered:

  1. Educational philosophy and reconstruction
  2. Curriculum theory
  3. History of science curriculum change in the global context and Singapore
  4. Science education standards documents in Singapore and other countries
  5. Unpacking “Scientific literacy” in 21CC literature in the global context and connections to PISA

Participants with background and/or experiences in areas related to science education will better appreciate the course contents.

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
