Introduction

This course introduces students to the research design process in early childhood related topics. This course is essential in preparing students for their dissertation and MMM800 (Critical Inquiry) course which would require them to conduct a small research study within a single semester. This course provides the necessary preparation by allowing students to craft a coherent research design gathering literature, sifting through theories, identifying a focused topic and honing in on the study's purpose as well as selecting the specific research methodology for their study which is centered in the early years and commonly used in early childhood education.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Studies (12 AU):

• MEC901 Child Development (0-8 years)
• MEC902 Issues and Trends in Early Childhood Education
• MEC903 Research Investigations in Early Childhood Education
 
Upon completion of the fourth course, MEC906 Curriculum Design and Development in Early Childhood Education, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Early Childhood Education (16 AU).

This course introduces students to the research design process in early childhood related topics. It equips students to craft a coherent research design – gathering & synthesizing literature, identifying a focused research topic, presenting the study’s purpose, and selecting appropriate research methodology.

  1. Early Childhood Research: Theoretical Foundations
    • Research with children and families
    • Foregrounding voice
    • Research about, for and with children
  2. Selecting a topic in Early Childhood
    • Exploring the local early childhood education landscape
  3. Exploring your topic: Reviewing literature and creating an annotated bibliography
  4. Crafting research questions and thinking about analysis approaches
  5. Methodology and Methods generally used in Early Childhood Educational Research
  6. Alternative Approaches: Drawing, Puppets/Dolls, Videography and Photography with young children and families- applications to the local context
  • A teaching qualification such as the NIE's Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least ONE year of teaching experience OR
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education approved by the Early Childhood Development Agency, Singapore and at least three years of teaching experience in pre-schools.
