Introduction

Psychology plays an important role in everyday design. It is the key to creating products and services that satisfy users’ needs and enhance their experiences. This course will teach core psychological concepts related to human performance and user experience, and techniques for conducting user-centered design.

After this course, students should be able to:

1) Describe basic psychological theories that can be applied to everyday design.

2) Use psychological principles to explain why certain everyday design solutions work or do not work.

3) Apply methods such as task analysis and usability study to identify and solve problems in everyday design.

  1. Fundamental Concepts in the Psychology of Everyday Design This lecture will cover core psychological concepts and theories related to human-centered design, including attention, perception, learning, and memory.
  2. User-centered Design I: Theory and Principles This lecture will introduce design thinking, a problem-solving methodology that aims to generate innovative solutions to address human needs. It will cover key principles in design thinking.
  3. User-centered Design II: Methods and Analysis This lecture will cover methods in user-centered design, such as task analysis, contextual inquiry, prototyping, and usability testing.
  4. Emotion, Culture, and Design This lecture will cover psychological principles about emotion and culture, and how these principles can be applied in human-centered design.

Assoc Professor Qiu Lin

Associate Professor, School of Social Sciences

Lin Qiu received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. His research interests include Social Psychology, Cyberpsychology, and Computational Social Science. He has published papers in Psychological Science, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Research in Personality, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Computers in Human Behavior, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. He is the Associate Editor of Asian Journal of Social Psychology and Associate Editor of Journal of Computational Social Science. His research interests are in Social Psychology, Media Psychology, Cyberpsychology, Computational Social Science, Human-computer Interaction.
