Introduction
Editorial design has always been an essential component in the field of publishing and communication. This short course will focus on equipping aspiring professionals in the design and print industries with extensive knowledge in design elements, typography, grid systems and layout design. Learners will then apply their understanding to a hands-on publication project using Adobe Indesign software.
By the end of this short course, learners will be able to:
- Develop an intermediate skill set in visual literacy
- Understand the roles of design elements and typography in design communication
- Apply different grid systems and frameworks in layout design
- Explore techniques in the creative process of editorial design from ideation to execution
- Communicate engaging content and concepts through traditional and digital media
- Develop design software competency for editorial design
Day 1
- Course description and objectives
- Understanding of design elements, typography and grid systems
- Case studies of editorial design templates in different types of publications for various audience types
- Discussion of project brief
- Brainstorming of content, frameworks and layout ideas
Day 2
- Class demo tutorial of Adobe Indesign software
- Project in progress – confirmation of proposed topic and creating the flat plan
- Project in progress – preparation of text and images for project
Day 3
- Project in progress – digital development of publication
- Individual presentation of project
- Project critique and feedback
Diploma in any design-related discipline with minimum one year of work experience.
This short course is designed for various disciplines that include aspiring designers in Graphic Design, Advertising, Graphic Communication and Design Communication; covering major industries not limited to Graphic Design, Advertising, Publishing and Printing.
