Introduction

This course will provide an overview of the different qualitative and quantitative methods and tools available for ageing research. Students will gain a broad conceptual understanding of the various methods and gain practical experience on using the method for conducting research on topics related to older persons.

3. Apply knowledge of the methods to design studies and analyze data
4. Write quantitative and qualitative reports

Prof Ho Hau Yan Andy

Dr Andy H. Y. Ho is a multi-awards winning psychologist, social scientist, and educator who specializes in thanatology, gerontology, psychotherapy, digital health, and community empowerment. He is the Past President of the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC), Board Director of the prestigious International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (IWGDDB), and Director of Research of the Palliative Care Centre for Excellence in Research and Education (PalC).
 
In over 20-years of full-time academia, Andy has successfully secured over SGD$30 million in competitive grants to conduct a multitude of empirical, translational, and participatory action research projects aimed at fostering active and compassionate citizenry. Since joining NTU in November 2014, he has been awarded, as Principal and Co-Principal Investigator, 25 major competitive research grants totaling SGD$15 million from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, National Medical Research Council, National Arts Council, Tote Board SG Enable, Temasek Foundation, and other prominent funding bodies.

Assoc Prof Premchand Varma Dommaraju is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the MSc in Applied Gerontology programme at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his PhD in sociology from Arizona State University and did his post-doctoral fellowship at Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. Before switching to sociology for my graduate studies, Assoc Prof Premchand studied computer science and engineering and received B.Eng (First Class) degree from University of Madras. Assoc Prof Premchand’s research focuses on social and demographic transformations and their implications in Asia. He is particularly interested in marriage and divorce, families and households, and ageing in South, Southeast and Central Asia. His work has appeared in leading population and demographic journals including Population and Development Review, Population Studies, Demographic Research and Social Science & Medicine.
