Clean up of East Coast Beach
Over 50 students and staff from NTU gathered on 16 August morning to clean a section of the beach along East Coast Park. In a short span of less than an hour, the students and staff collected 65kg of trash, which consisted mainly of plastic waste.
The beach clean-up was kicked off by Prof Kwok Kian Woon, Associate Provost (Student Life), NTU, Ms Laura Cassiani, Executive Director of Mission Blue, and Assistant Prof Benoit Taisne from the Asian School of the Environment.
The activity was organised as part of Dr Sylvia Earle's visit to NTU where she delivered a keynote address at the "Melting Ice and Plastic Seas" symposium. Dr Earle was also appointed to the board of NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore. Click here to view the Straits Times article.
Meet & Greet with Dr Sylvia Earle
In the afternoon of 16 August, participants of the beach clean had the opportunity to meet with Dr Sylvia Earle. Dr Earle shared her experiences as a champion of conserving the oceans and marine research, thanked the students for their efforts during the beach clean, and encouraged the students to play an active role in promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
The Office of International Affairs organised the clean-up of East Coast Beach and the meet and greet session with Dr Sylvia Earle with the support of the Earth Observatory of Singapore, EarthlinkNTU and Trash Hero Singapore.
