NISTH co:Labs
NISTH’s program of collaborative Labs (NISTH co:Labs) enables NTU researchers to create international networks to fuel new research topics that address societal challenges. These partnerships, inclusive rather than insular, aim to bring together NTU faculty from disciplines cutting across STEM and non-STEM, with established researchers and professionals from academia, industry, government and the community. Unlike traditional research funding for individual research projects, this grant seeks to seed a new field of research, new research communities, collaborations and networks. A NISTH co:Lab will comprise of a core interdisciplinary team of NTU faculty who will build a network of researchers aiming to explore a new research topic, area or field with a strong focus on societal impact.
Objectives
Pioneer a novel interdisciplinary research topic, field or area that aims to contribute to solving an important societal challenge.
Support the creation of new inclusive research partnerships and sustained global networks between the technical and social sciences and humanities with a common interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary interest;
Foster international community building among researchers from academia, industry, government and non-governmental institutions and members of civil society;
Seek novel approaches in communicating science to educate and cultivate interests, knowledge and competencies among stakeholders in NTU and community at-large; and
Support the development of a larger grant proposal in the direction of the proposed research and aligning to NTU2025 research objectives.

NISTH collaborative Labs (NISTH co:Labs)
Overview of the grant:
A NISTH Lab will be supported with seed funding over three years to position a new interdisciplinary research topic or field, adopt a novel approach and create a network of international collaboration. The funding could be used, for example, to strengthen the international network, organise a workshop or conference resulting in output like a book sprint or special issue, develop educational content or support the development of a research proposal as a key deliverable. We anticipate that these labs would lead to more significant projects with funding from other sources and the creation of sustained networks benefiting society in the future.
We aim to establish up to 3 NISTH co:Labs with funding of a max of 25,000 SGD per year for 2-3 years. After that period, an assessment will take place for each co:lab for potential further funding.

Eligibility
A team of at least two principal investigators (PIs) can apply for the NISTH co:Labs Grant, where at least one of them is a NISTH Societal Impact Fellow.
The team should have at least one faculty member from either the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CoHASS), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Business School (NBS) or S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) AND at least one faculty member from LKC School of Medicine (LKCMed), College of Science (CoS) or College of Engineering (COE).
Submitted proposals should have an interdisciplinary focus at their core, explore new approaches and research topics, and include other communities (i.e., researchers from academia, industry and civil society). PIs must clearly define their proposed new research topic and related societal challenge, the novelty of the thematic research topic, area or field, justify the proposed overall approach, indicate and justify the activities they are seeking to have supported, identify experts they will engage, specify the goal, objectives, expected outcomes, desired impact and how the impact will be measured.

NTU Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity (NISTH)
Launched in March 2019, NTU’s Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity offers a platform for interdisciplinary collaborative research into disruptive materials and technologies, data analytics and AI for the benefit of humanity.
NISTH is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence that seeks to make sense of how technological advances impact societies, cultures and human behaviour. The Institute will bolster NTU’s ability to contribute towards Singapore’s vision of becoming a Smart Nation and will focus particularly on the impact of the fourth technological revolution on urban Asia. The Institute adopts a thematic approach that cuts across broad subject areas such as artificial intelligence, big data and health sciences.
The theme is ‘20 years from 2020’ where we imagine a time period of 20 years to find solutions to the challenges Singaporean society and people globally are facing today. NISTH brings together key scientists, scholars, industries and leaders to execute change for the benefit of humanity.
We seek to support interdisciplinary cutting-edge research that is designed to positively impact society while also leading to strong scholarship that results in leading peer-reviewed outputs and successful follow-up grants.
