Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Education

Double major

Programme Type

Full-time

Singapore’s internationally recognised education system is underpinned by the National Institute of Education’s long-standing commitment to research-informed teacher education. For more than 70 years, NIE has prepared educators who are intellectually grounded, reflective, and capable of responding critically to cultural and social change through rigorous disciplinary study.

Aligned with this mission, the Literature major involves an exploration of human experience as captured by individual writers across time and across cultures.

Through close, careful, and increasingly sensitive reading of rich texts, student teachers develop a curious, critical, nuanced, and self-reflexive mind, alongside an appreciation of the multiple ways in which literary texts are intimately linked to the cultures and societies that produce them.

You will have opportunities to explore and study in depth canonical texts as well as literature from Singapore and the region, World Literature, adolescent literature, and film texts. You will also gain a deeper appreciation of how interpretation and intuitive readings can be informed and complemented by perspectives from feminism, history, psychoanalysis, and related fields.

NIE’s programme comprises courses on specialised subject knowledge in at least one academic discipline, education and pedagogy courses for effective teaching.

Student teachers can gain international perspectives on education, through our International Practicum, Semester Exchange and Service and Leadership Training programmes.

Altruistic virtues are also infused in our curriculum. For example, our student teachers can reach out and render service to the community through our Group Endeavours in Service Learning (GESL) projects.

Prospective applicants are required to fulfil both NTU/NIE and MOE requirements. For the MOE requirements, please refer to the link below for more information. For the academic discipline requirements, please see the details outlined below.
