Current Research Interests
His group's research focuses on the synthesis and properties of functional polymers and hybrid materials, as well as on functionalization of polymers. There are several ongoing projects including conducting polymers, azo-polymers and nanocomposites. One objective is to understand the mechanisms and structural origin of unique electronic, photonic and dielectric properties of these materials. There is also a strong effort in the synthesis of nano-porous and nano-structured materials via sol gel, templating and electrochemical methods for applications in low-k dielectrics and organic or polymer electronic devices. The group also has a continual effort in functional and high performance polymers for defence-related applications. He has contributed more than 150 international journal publications and supervised/co-supervised more than 25 masters and PhD research students.

Biographical Information
He obtained his BASc degree from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University in China. He went on to pursue his MSc and PhD degrees at the Manchester Materials Science Centre, University of Manchester, in the United Kingdom. After graduating in 1990, he worked as an SERC (UK) postdoctoral associate at Manchester University for one-and-a-half years. He joined Nanyang Technological University in 1992 as a faculty member where he co-founded the polymer laboratory in the School of Materials Science and Engineering. He served as the Head of Division of Materials Technology from 2000 to 2002 and Director of Graduate Programs in the School from 1999 to 2004.
