AERO Specialisations - AY22-23 onwards

AERO Students can choose their Broadening Deepening Electives (BDE)s from more than one Final Year Specialisation. Those who have read a miniumum of 15 AUs from one Final Year Specialisation will be deemed to have specialised.

The school offers 6 areas of specialization, which are optional for the students, namely, Energy and the Environment, Manufacturing Engineering, Autonomous Systems, Systems Engineering, Smart Manufacturing and Digital Factory and Mechanical Engineering.

Please note that only ONE specialisation can be reflected on the transcript.

Note: MA48xx courses will usually offered in either Sem 1 or Sem 2 only, please take note of this when planning your study plan. Students to refer to Class Schedule,  click here, for offering semester and pre-requisite required for courses

The following courses can be read as BDE with effect from AY2023/24 (with the exception of MA0218, MA2001, MA2006, MA2007, MA2700, MA3001, MA3003, MA3704, MA3705, MA4002 and MA4701).

 Notes:

  1. Major PE are different from General Education Requirements - Prescribed Electives (GER-PE). Major PE provide more in-depth knowledge. These are classified as final year courses.
  2. The semester in which a Major PE is offered is subject to change.
  3. A Major PE may be cancelled when there is an insufficient number of students or for other reasons.
  4. Specialisation is optional. Only 1 specialisation will be reflected on the transcript.

SPECIALISATION IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

AERO students will have to read the following courses under the specified course types to fulfil the specialisation:

COURSE TYPECOURSE CODE AND TITLE
Core+MA3704 Aircraft Electrical Devices
Unrestricted Elective+MA2002 Theory of Mechanism
Unrestricted Elective+MA2009^ Introduction to Electrical Circuits & Electronic Devices
Major Prescribed Elective+MA3001 Machine Element Design
Major Prescribed Elective+MA4002 Fluid Dynamics
^MA2009 and MA5705 (MA8005) are mutually exclusive courses. Students who have read MA5705 (MA8005) before AY2018 S1 are allowed to reclassify MA5705 (MA8005) as UE to be counted towards the Specialisation.
+All courses must be graded - S/U option cannot be used.

This new specialisation will enable graduates to apply for registration as Professional Engineers, if other requirements (4 years of relevant practical experience in engineering, FEE & PPEE examinations, interview) are also fulfilled. Please see the following extract:

The Professional Engineers Board registers professional engineers in the branches of civil, electrical mechanical and chemical engineering. A person applying for registration as a professional engineer to the Professional Engineers Board is required to hold an approved degree or qualification listed in the  Professional Engineers (Approved Qualifications) Notification / Amendment Notification 2016 and acquired relevant practical experience.  The applicant is required to sit and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination and the Practice of Professional Engineering Examination or the oral examination (for a person previously registered as a professional engineer or is an experienced applicant). In addition, the applicant is required to attend a professional interview.

Further details on Professional Engineer registration from PEB can be found here.
