Research Project

Biological "VELCRO®"

vaultVaults are large ribonucleoprotein particles found in nearly all eukaryotic cells with dimensions of 73*41 nm and hollow barrel-like structure. The vaults are composed of multiple copies of three proteins (major vault protein, TEP1 and VPARP) and an untranslated RNA. As vaults naturally exist in cells, they are non-immunogenic and nontoxic. These characteristics make vaults promising as nanocapsules in drug delivery. We are investigating the interaction between the major vault protein and part of VPARP for applications in controlled-release of protein drugs from within the vaults.
