Xudong Jiang received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China in 1983 and 1986, respectively, and received the Ph.D. degree from the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg, Germany in 1997, all in electrical and electronic engineering.

From 1986 to 1993, he worked as Lecturer at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China where he received two Science and Technology Awards from the Ministry for Electronic Industry of China. He was a recipient of the German Konrad-Adenauer Foundation young scientist scholarship. From 1993 to 1997, he was with the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg, Germany as scientific assistant. From 1998 to 2002, He worked with the Centre for Signal Processing (CSP), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, first as Research Fellow and then as Senior Research Fellow, where he developed a fingerprint verification algorithm that achieved the fastest and the second most accurate fingerprint verification in the International Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC2000). From 2002 to 2004 he worked as Lead Scientist and appointed as the Head of Biometrics Laboratory at the Institute for Infocomm Research, A*Star, Singapore. He joined NTU as a faculty member in 2004 and served as the Director of the Centre for Information Security (CIS) from 2005 to 2011. Currently, Dr Jiang is a tenured Associate Professor of School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University.

Dr Jiang has published over 100 research papers in international refereed journals and conferences. He is also an inventor of 7 patents (3 US patents), some of which were commercialized. Dr Jiang is a senior member of IEEE and has been serving as Editorial Board Member, Guest Editor and Reviewer of multiple international journals, and serving as Program Committee member, Keynote Speaker and Session Chair of multiple international conferences. His research interest includes pattern recognition, computer vision, image and signal processing, biometrics, face recognition and fingerprint recognition.

Awards and Recognitions:

  • 12/1990: Science and Technology Award for the research project "Spectral Estimation Methods and Adaptive Signal Processing Technology" from The Ministry of Mechanic and Electronic Industry of the People's Republic of China 

  • 12/1993: Science and Technology Award for the research project "Direction-of-arrival Finding Technique Using the Spatial Spectral Estimation" from The Ministry of Electronic Industry of the People's Republic of China

  • 10/1992-9/1997: Young Scientist Scholarship from Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany

  • 09/2000: The developed fingerprint verification algorithm (written by C) achieved top efficiency and second top accuracy in the International Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC2000)

  • 12/2000: ”The Best Researcher in Year 2000” award from Centre for Signal Processing, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

  • 11/2002: Quarterly Best Paper Award from Institute for Infocomm Research, A*Star, Singapore

  • 05/2004: Quarterly Best Paper Award from Institute for Infocomm Research, A*Star, Singapore

  • 4/2007:   Appreciation Award for the contribution in the Information Technology Standards Committee from the IT Standards Committee, Singapore

  • 2007:      K.C. Wong Fellowship Award for the contribution to the research collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Science by the K.C. Wong Education Foundation, Hong Kong

  • 2008:      Best Biometrics Student Paper Award from International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) for the 19th ICPR paper “Verification of Human Faces Using Predicted Eigenvalues,” co-authored with my PhD student B. Mandal
