A New Face at NTU EEE: Asst Prof Jack Lee Hyunsu

For Assistant Professor Jack Lee, engineering is ultimately about improving lives.

Joining EEE in May 2026, Asst Prof Lee brings with him a passion for creating technologies that sit at the intersection of electronics, medicine, and human health.

His work may involve highly sophisticated integrated circuits and wireless biomedical systems, but the impact he hopes to create is deeply personal: helping people live healthier and better lives through technology.

 “At the heart of my research is the idea that engineering can directly improve human wellbeing,” he shares. “That possibility continues to motivate me every day.”

Asst Prof Lee’s research focuses on analogue and mixed-signal integrated circuits (ICs), particularly for biomedical applications. His work explores how tiny electronic systems can wirelessly power medical implants, transmit data and stimulate neural activity.

One of the most meaningful parts of his journey so far has been validating his technologies in live animal models for neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy — work that bridges circuit engineering with biomedical science.

“It was incredibly rewarding to see how semiconductor and circuit technologies could contribute to understanding and potentially treating neurological conditions,” he says.

Originally from South Korea, Asst Prof Lee completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Korea University in 2025, where he quickly established himself as an emerging researcher in the semiconductor and IC field. Along the way, he published six first-authored IEEE journal papers and received several prestigious international recognitions, including the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Pre-Doctoral Grant Award and the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Predoctoral Achievement Award.

Among his proudest moments was receiving the Presidential Award of the Republic of Korea at the Korea Semiconductor Design Competition in 2022, where he was the sole Korean recipient that year.

Yet despite the accolades, colleagues often describe him as someone grounded, curious, and quietly driven by purpose.

Looking ahead, Asst Prof Lee hopes to develop next-generation implantable and wearable biomedical systems that are smaller, smarter, and more energy-efficient. His vision includes biomedical system-on-chip platforms capable of integrating wireless power transfer, neural stimulation, data communication, and on-chip intelligence into compact devices that could one day transform healthcare delivery.

Joining NTU EEE was a natural next step for him because of the school’s strong interdisciplinary culture and its growing strengths in electronics, healthcare technologies, and innovation.

“What excites me most about NTU is the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and translate advanced engineering research into technologies that can benefit society,” he says.

As medicine and engineering become increasingly interconnected, Asst Prof Lee believes future breakthroughs will come from researchers willing to cross traditional boundaries, combining deep technical expertise with empathy and real-world understanding.

And for him, that future is only just beginning.
