Visit to NTU Singapore by the Lee Wee Nam Family
18 September 2019
The Market Place @ North Spine and the Lee Wee Nam Library were abuzz with excitement during the visit by the family and descendants of the Late Mr Lee Wee Nam from 11am to 12.30pm on Monday, 16 September 2019.
The visit was in line with the exhibition on the life of Mr Lee (1881 – 1964), a local philanthropist and business leader who was a prominent figure in the business community, having held positions such as Managing Director and Chairman of Sze Hai Tong Bank, Singapore, President of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and President of Teo Chew Poit Ip Huay Kwan. He was also a strong proponent for education and was the first President of Ngee Ann Girls' School.
In 2001, Mr Lee’s family donated $10 million to the NTU 21st Century Fund, which was launched by then President S R Nathan. The largest single donation by a private entity at that time, the Fund supported NTU's push for a life sciences programme and established the Lee Wee Nam Professorship in Life Sciences and Research Fund in Life Sciences. In honour of this donation, the library was named the Lee Wee Nam Library. In 2007, the Lee family donated an additional $5 million, forming the Lee Wee Nam Science and Technology Library Collection Endowment Fund. Organised by NTU Library, this exhibition is a tribute to Mr Lee, who inspired these generous donations to NTU over the years.
During the visit, family members and descendants took pictures with various memorabilia and attempted to identify themselves and their loved ones in different photographs. The Programme ended with a scrumptious lunch at Peach Garden.
The Lee Wee Nam Exhibition: Life & Times of a Philanthropist is held from 13 September 2019 to 28 September 2019.
