The Science Leaders Academy is a programme in River Valley High School under the MOE West Zone Centre of Excellence (Science and Technology) that aims to nurture leaders in the field of science and technology. SLA features 3 key programmes: Young Scientists @ Work, Global Science Village and Science for the Community.
Under the Young Scientists @ Work Programme and NTU MSE Research Attachment Programme, the River Valley High School Students (Rachel Genevieve Law, Joeline Ang Li Ting and Tseng Fan Shuen) received tutelage from mentors and conducted experimentation in NTU. The students worked on project entitled "Relation Between Molecular Structure and Molecular Interaction Studied During Crystallisation" to investigate the perverse molecular interaction in crystallisation and identify the key factors that affect crystallisation processes. The 8-months programme was started on 17 July 2014. The experiment was carried out using the 2-chamber method to crystallize NaCl, KDP and Alum by varying parameters such as solute identity, supersaturation, flow dynamics and presence/texture of seed crystals amongst others.
