Preparing for Singapore’s Long Island Project: Insights from Prof Chu Jian

Preparatory works for the Long Island project could affect certain stretches of the waters off East Coast Park at different intervals, said the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) in an article by The Straits Times.

It said that it is planning to start these works – which include removing seabed obstructions and moving materials into the waters – and aims to undertake them progressively to minimise the impact on those who frequent the area.

Preparatory works could involve mapping the seafloor and water depth, as well as carrying out an environmental impact assessment, engineers told ST.

Professor Chu Jian, Chair of NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, said that if safety concerns arise, certain coastline or coastal areas could be closed to the public.

He added that the authorities will likely have a clearer picture of potential risks after the completion of site investigation works.
