As I begin my tenure today as the President of NTU Singapore, I write to wish you all much happiness and good health in the new year. I hope that 2018 will bring you great achievement and fulfilment.
It is my honour to join you in service of this great university that stands for all the values I hold near and dear ̶ excellence in education, learning, discovery and innovation; sustainable impact on society; global engagement; improving the human condition; and dedication to our communities.
During the past few months, I have had the pleasure of getting to know many members of the university community on various occasions, including at meetings, events and special retreats organised around campus and across Singapore as part of my ongoing listening tour. As an outgrowth of these meetings, I have already been working with members of my senior leadership team and many of you to help shape a number of your ideas into actionable major initiatives that will have a lasting impact.
Your input and suggestions are very important to me and they matter as we collectively design and execute our plans and actions. You are all invited to come and hear about some of these plans and a list of undertakings for my first 100 days at NTU at the Admin Town Hall meeting on our main campus on Wednesday, 10 January 2018. I'm looking forward to sharing my vision for NTU with you and to listen to your views and perspectives. I hope that you will make time to attend the Town Hall at The Wave or catch it via live streaming on campus or on the Intranet after the event.
What is clearly evident is the pride our university community has in how far NTU has advanced in a relatively short time. The University’s achievements are impressive by any measure, thanks to the enormous efforts of faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees, former presidents and other senior leaders. These accomplishments have deservedly received much attention on the national and international arenas.
Your drive to excel and to take NTU to even greater heights is palpable. I hope you will continue to offer your observations and suggestions on how we may build on our momentum and expand the excellent international reputation that NTU already has today. My visits to various units across our diverse and vibrant community and around Singapore will continue in the coming weeks and months, so that I can benefit from your thoughts, perspectives and aspirations for the University as part of my extensive listening tour.
My wife, Mary, and I are touched by the warm reception and friendly welcome you have extended to us since the news of my appointment several months ago. We have made many new friendships, and reconnected with a large number of colleagues at NTU and in Singapore, some of whom we have known for more than 25 years. We have now established our new home on this beautiful campus. We look forward to visiting with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, trustees and friends of the University in a variety of formal and informal gatherings at the President’s Lodge, around campus and across the globe.
I also look forward to working with you to advance NTU's mission of creating and sharing knowledge for the benefit of Singapore and the world at large.
With best regards
Distinguished University Professor
