Professor Michael KHOR

Professor Michael Khor obtained his B Sc (Hons) and PhD degrees from Monash University, Australia. He worked as an Experimental Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Melbourne before joining the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1989.

Professor Khor has held the position of Director of Research at NTU (2004-2008) and Deputy Director, Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) prior to joining the National Research Foundation (NRF) in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as Director (Projects) in March 2008. He has been invited as Visiting Professor by the National Defense Academy, Japan in 2001 and was recently invited as Guest Professor by Zhejiang University, PR China. Among other research awards he received are the Japan Science and Technology Agency (STA) Fellowship and the Japan National Institutes of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Fellowship. He has served as President, Institute of Materials East Asia since 1996 and currently chairs the Electronics Application Division board of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM³).

Professor Khor has recently concluded his secondment at the National Research Foundation (NRF), and returned to serve as Associate Provost (Research), President’s Office, NTU. At NRF, Professor Khor was responsible for a range of research initiatives and programmes that included the Competitive Research Programme (CRP), NRF Research Fellowship, Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE ) building construction, Clean Water, Clean Energy, Biomedical Sciences – Translational Clinical Research (BMS-TCR) and Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Strategic Research Programmes, Research Centres of Excellence and the National Framework on Innovation and Enterprise (NFIE).

Professor Khor is the originator of the annual conference series on Materials Processing for Properties and Performance (MP3) and is active in the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, serving as judge for best paper and best poster awards in recent ITSC conferences. Professor Khor sits on the editorial board of four international journals on biomaterials, applied ceramics, and materials science and technology. He has edited/co-edited 18 conference proceedings on advanced materials processing and surface modification technologies. He has published over 200 journal papers, and over 120 conference papers. These papers are cited over 4,500 times (with a Hirsch index of 33) by fellow researchers according to Scopus.

His research focus on nano-bioceramics and nano-composites for artificial cornea implants, orthopaedic and dental implants, spark plasma sintering (SPS) of nano-materials and nano-powders (metals and ceramics), thin films, thermal sprayed coatings, thermal barrier coatings (TBC) for aerospace applications and solid oxide fuel cells.
