Research Fellow ( Intelligent Control Theory and Applications, Machine Learning, Fuzzy Neural Networks)

Established in 1981, the SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING (EEE) is one of the founding Schools of the Nanyang Technological University. Built on a culture of excellence, the School is renowned for its high academic standards and strong tradition in research. To support teaching and cutting-edge research, EEE is host to 11 research centres and more than 50 laboratories, which are well-equipped with modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. With about 200 faculty members and an enrolment of more than 4,000, of which about 1,300 are graduate students, it is one of the largest EEE schools in the world.

A fuzzy inference mechanism in approximate reasoning can be regarded as a function which derives a meaningful output from imprecise inputs. A very powerful nature of fuzzy inference mechanism is that it can deal with imprecise or vague information. Imprecise information are represented in the form of a fuzzy rule base and meaningful output can be drawn for an imprecise observation using fuzzy IF–THEN rules. A fuzzy inference system (FIS) is a system that uses fuzzy inference mechanism that maps inputs (feature in the case of fuzzy classification) to outputs (classes). FISs are nonlinear black-box models that describe the relation between the inputs and the output of a real system and they have been widely used in numerous real-world applications. 

Experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as "learning through reflection on doing". Arguably, experiential learning is one of the most effective learning strategies of human beings as experience plays a key role in our learning process. Experiential Learning Theory encapsulates the learning process of a human being.

The appointed candidate will carry out mathematical analysis on how a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) can be used to model every experiential learning model and to demonstrate how each component of an experiential learning model can be fitted into fuzzy inference mechanism. It is envisaged that the realisation of ELT in the framework of a FIS will further advance machine learning to truly human-like intelligence.

  • PhD in Intelligent Control/Computational Intelligence
  • Candidates with strong publication record are preferred
