********************************************************************************************************************(POST 4) -Researcher (3 positions)
(Centre of Advanced Information Systems (CAIS))

Job Description

Three research assistants are sought for regarding investigations in the area of data management and mining in systems biology. Each research assistant will contribute to one of three complementary research projects funded by Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA). At first, this position is limited to June 2010. In case of a positive evaluation of achievements, which is expected, it is highly likely that this position will be extended for at least one more year. The research focus of these three positions is any one of the following topics:

  1. Investigate efficient and scalable techniques for building storage and query tools for biological data. A key goal is to build tools that can enhance the usability of the system by biologists.
  2. Investigate efficient and scalable techniques for in-silico combinational drug therapy.
  3. Investigate efficient and scalable techniques for summarizing and comparing protein interaction/molecular network data.

Requirements

Applicants must have a computer science/engg. degree from a good University with very good grades. A good knowledge of data management techniques, algorithms, and data mining (optional) is required. Knowledge of biology is not mandatory for Project 1. It is preferable to have basic understanding of biology for projects 2 and 3. Excellence, reliability, capability of independent as well as team work, aptitude to theoretical as well as practical work, very good programming skills, very good control of the English language are expected.

Remuneration & Benefits

Successful candidates can expect a competitive salary and benefits.

Working Environment

The positions are in a motivated, cooperative, and friendly team consisting of doctoral students. The projects are led by Assoc/P Sourav S Bhowmick of NTU and Prof C Forbes Dewey, Jr of MIT, USA and have collaboration with biologists and computation biologists. (POST 5) - Research Fellow (mathematics, physics and computer graphics)

Job Description

The job is in the area of mathematics, geometry and computer graphics. This is a part of the NRF funded project entitled “Visual and Haptic Rendering in Co-Space”. The work will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies (CAMTech) of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.  The goal of the project is to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry, visual appearance and tangible physical properties of objects in Co-Space. The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and explicit functions, description of complex geometry using parametric partial differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic devices. One RF will work on implicit/parametric/explicit function-based rendering while another one will mostly be dealing with PDE-based geometric modeling.

Requirements

1. A PhD degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mathematics or related-fields.
2. Advance knowledge of mathematics, geometry, physics and good programming skills. Evidence of the experience will be required.
