Research Associate/ Postdoctoral Research Fellow (1 Position) in Health Service Operation
The position is immediately needed for the project on “Estimating and Simulating Locational Demand for Emergency Departments in Singapore,” funded by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, Health Services Research Competitive Grant. This work will be carried out at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) in NTU (Singapore), in collaboration with NUS faculty. The project investigates the forecast of aggregate patient arrival at individual emergency departments considering their geo-economic and geo-demographic characteristics by drawing data from the national survey of hospital patients.
Position Responsibilities include:
Coordinating the execution of a survey taking place at Singapore hospital sites
Managing a group of staff who will run the survey
Data collection and organization
project coordination and management
Conducting literature searches and writing literature review.
Data analysis
Contribute to analysis of data and writing of research reports.
Essential qualifications/requirements
Master or PhD degree based in a quantitative social scientific area from a reputable university.
Credentials in completing research projects.
Statistics and analytical skills (e.g. use SPSS, etc.).
A team player with a high ability to both work independently and in coordination with others in a research setting
Starting Date: As soon as possible, latest by March 10, 2012.
Remuneration and Benefits
Successful candidate can expect a competitive salary and benefits. The initial contract can be anywhere between 1 to 2 years but ideally a minimum commitment of 1 year from the candidates is expected.

Research Assistant/Research Associate (1 Position)
A Research Assistant/Research Associate position is immediately available for the project on “Can Digital Technology Be in the Frontline Battle for Obesity: A Multi-Platform Assessment of the Role of Digital Technology in the Communication of Health Information and Health Education of Young Singaporeans” funded by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, Health Services Research Competitive Grant. This work will be carried out at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) in NTU (Singapore). External collaborators of this project will include partners from universities in U.S. and the National Heart Centre in Singapore.
The research proposes that digital technology offers a number of possible approaches to battling obesity. We’ll be studying the efficacy of a number of new interactive digital platforms like the Wii and the Kinnect for health communications and the prevention of obesity. In particular, we aim to assess knowledge acquisition, modification of attitudes, and influence on health behavior intention amongst children and youth in Singapore. Our findings will have implications for health communication strategies and policies.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow for Health and Medical Informatics
A Postdoctoral Fellowship is immediately available at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) in the Health and Medical Informatics areas.
This area focuses on the design, development and evaluation of advanced interactive health, healthcare and medical information systems. It covers acquisition (information extraction and text mining), organization, and management of health-related information, such as drug-related information, patient records, clinical research results, biomedical research data, medical concepts, and hospital information. Main focus of current studies is opinion mining and sentiment analysis of health-related user-generated content.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
Essential:
• Ph.D. in computer science, information science or related field (A master’s degree with significant research experience can be considered for the Research Associate position),
• Experience in text mining, information extraction, or natural language processing,
• Good academic writing skills with demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed papers,
• Ability to work independently and as a team member, and
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
• Familiarity with opinion mining and sentiment analysis,
• Experience in programming, such as JAVA, and

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE/PROJECT OFFICER
SINGAPORE INTERNET RESEARCH CENTRE (SiRC), NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
Aim: Strengthening ICTD Research Capacity in Asia program (SIRCA) establishes and brings together the endeavours of IDRC PAN and SiRC. It is designed to ensure that that capacities to conduct research in the area of Information and Communications Technology and/for Development (ICT4D or ICTD) are built in Asia. This applies particularly to emerging researchers based in Asia who are relatively new to ICTD research and interested in undertaking theoretically based and methodologically rigorous research.
These applicants would benefit from concerted capacity building exercises including a mentorship arrangement. In particular, the program promotes broad-based high-quality multidisciplinary research in Internet development, e-services, new media use and social impact, and policy for the benefit and advancement of individuals, organizations, nation and society. The program supports research projects that will strengthen the body of methodologically sound and theoretically-based social science research in ICTD.
The SIRCA program is in its final phase and SiRC is currently working with IDRC for a new global grant.
The Research Associate/Project Officer will be responsible for:
- Supporting the closure process of the SIRCA programme including:
• Tracking of research projects reports;
• Preparing final technical reports to the funder.
- Supporting the new SIRCA II Global grant, including:
• Managing the SIRCA II research grants program funded by the IDRC.
• Coordinating and tracking the progress of research projects under the program.
• Coordinating and organising events (conference, workshop and meetings) for the program.
• Managing and contributing to in-house publications.
• Compiling technical reports and other supporting documents to the funders and other related stakeholders.
• Developing strong interpersonal relationships with researchers, collaborators and other stakeholders in Singapore and outside with whom you would have regular contact.
• Other duties as directed.
Qualifications and experience
The RA/PO will:
• Have a good academic record that can be supported by output not limited to GPA and exam results (Undergraduate/postgraduate work in an internationally recognized university is a distinct advantage). Gaps in academic performance may be compensated by evidence of experience and attitude.
• Ideally have experience and interest in communications and/or ICT related issues.
• Have well developed and proven writing and quantitative skills.
• Be fluent in English. (Ability to work in other languages will be an advantage but is not essential.)
