Research Associate and Research Fellow positions
We are inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the above-mentioned positions in the fields of Power Systems, Power Electronics, Sensing and Communication. The research team led by Profs Gooi HB, So PL, Luo FL and Vilathgamuwa DM will train and equip you with the relevant research skills.
Job Description:
You will conduct leading-edge research in the design of MEMS which includes the design of software algorithms and control schemes for MEMS that can predict total customer (fixed and variable) loads and perform economic scheduling of distributed energy resources and MW/MVar rescheduling within MEMS. Specifically we are looking for expertise in the four sub-areas:
- A. Scheduling and Forecasting Functions
The Scheduling and Forecasting functions consist of Load Forecasting (LF) function which predicts the half-hourly fixed and price-sensitive load for the next 2 to 24 hours. The forecast values are needed for the execution of Unit Commitment (UC) which determines the half-hourly on/off schedules of DERs and their MW generation for the next 2 to 24 hours.
- B. Network Applications Function
Optimal Power Flow (OPF) recommends MW/MVAr rescheduling to MEMS if such outages or unplanned events should occur. The OPF’s recommendations are implemented via On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs) and raise/lower unit setpoints after emergency control to shed load and/or to start standby units has stabilized.
- C. Integration of Renewable Sources into MEMS
Renewable sources such as wind and solar need proper grid interfaces and appropriate control systems in order for them to work appropriately in grid-tied situations. As such, there is a need to design efficient grid interface power converters, control and maximum power point tracking algorithms. Candidates with strong background in power electronics and electrical drives and those with experience in power electronics hardware prototype construction are preferred.
Other research activities may include participating in research collaboration with local collaborators (EPGC at Fusionpolis and Jurong Island, etc), local industries, overseas universities and writing reports as required by A*STAR.
Job Requirements:
- Master/PhD degree with good honors in Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering (Students about to complete their Master degree will be considered too)
- Fluent verbal and written communications in English
Strong analytical and conceptual abilities
- Able to work independently or in a team in the realization of the R&D work
- Able to commit 1-2 years of your time in the project.
Entry level and starting salaries will depend on candidate's qualification and experience.
