Project  Title: Coding and Signal Processing for Channel with 2D-ISI and Insertion/Deletion Errors

In this project, we focus on developing the channel encoder, detector and decoder for channels with 2-dimensional inter-symbol-interference (2-D ISI) and insertion/deletion errors.  Such channels are encountered in ultra-high-density magnetic recording media such as BPMR, TDMR and HAMR.  The 2-D channel codes to be investigated include LDPC (low density parity check) codes matched to the 2D ISI channel trellis, and self-synchronizing Marker codes for correcting insertion and deletion errors. The 2-D detectors to be investigated include Iterative Row-Column BCJR algorithm, and Oversampled MMSE FDE (minimum-mean-square-error frequency-domain-equalizer) with soft output.  Candidates with experience in Turbo-type equalizer, LDPC code design, dirty-paper coding, synchronization-error-correcting code design are welcomed to apply.

Research Associate and Research Fellow
Positions in Maritime Energy Research – Shore Power

We are inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the above-mentioned positions in the fields of Power Systems and Power Electronics. The research team led by Profs Gooi HB, So PL, Low KS and Dr R Yan will train and equip you with the relevant research skills.

Job Description:

You will conduct leading-edge research in the design and setting up of a Land-based Energy Management System (LEMS) laboratory prototype.  The job scope includes the design of software algorithms and control schemes that can incorporate renewable and traditional energy resources, shore power, demand response management, efficiency enhancement initiatives, power converters, battery charging and business model that supports the transfer of shore-to-ship energy.   Specifically we are looking for expertise in the following three sub-areas:

A. Shore Power Applications Function
This function will use a 50/60 Hz three-phase variable voltage source in the range of 350-480 V for synchronizing both the shore and vessel grids automatically. A business model will be designed and implemented to support the metering and billing of the kWh amount of the energy sale to vessels.

B. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
A controller and a bi-directional power converter will need to be designed for energy conversion and management of BESS as well as for use in charging the batteries used in cherry pickers and forklifts in a shipyard.  The BESS capacity and various power converters within LEMS will need to be optimized to maximize its profit during day-to-day operation.

C. Integration of Renewable Sources into LEMS
Renewable sources such as solar PV panels need proper grid interfaces and appropriate control systems in order for them to work appropriately in grid-tied situations.  As such, there is a need to design efficient grid interface power converters, control and maximum power point tracking algorithms as part of the LEMS optimization.

Other research activities may include participating in research discussion with local industries and partners, overseas universities and writing reports as required by Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, Singapore and Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERIAN). Candidates with strong background in power electronics and electrical drives and those with experience in power electronics hardware prototype construction and/or software programming are preferred.

Job Requirements:

·      Master/PhD degree with good honors in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Students about to complete their Master degree will be considered too)

·      Fluent verbal and written communications in English

·      Strong analytical and conceptual abilities

·      Able to work independently or in a team in the realization of the R&D work

Research Associate and Research Fellow positions

We are inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the above-mentioned positions in the fields of Power Systems, Power Electronics, Sensing and Communication. The research team led by Profs Gooi HB, So PL, Luo FL and Vilathgamuwa DM will train and equip you with the relevant research skills.

Job Description:

You will conduct leading-edge research in the design of MEMS which includes the design of software algorithms and control schemes for MEMS that can predict total customer (fixed and variable) loads and perform economic scheduling of distributed energy resources and MW/MVar rescheduling within MEMS. Specifically we are looking for expertise in the four sub-areas:

  • A. Scheduling and Forecasting Functions
The Scheduling and Forecasting functions consist of Load Forecasting (LF) function which predicts the half-hourly fixed and price-sensitive load for the next 2 to 24 hours. The forecast values are needed for the execution of Unit Commitment (UC) which determines the half-hourly on/off schedules of DERs and their MW generation for the next 2 to 24 hours.
  • B. Network Applications Function
Optimal Power Flow (OPF) recommends MW/MVAr rescheduling to MEMS if such outages or unplanned events should occur. The OPF’s recommendations are implemented via On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs) and raise/lower unit setpoints after emergency control to shed load and/or to start standby units has stabilized.
  • C. Integration of Renewable Sources into MEMS
Renewable sources such as wind and solar need proper grid interfaces and appropriate control systems in order for them to work appropriately in grid-tied situations.  As such, there is a need to design efficient grid interface power converters, control and maximum power point tracking algorithms. Candidates with strong background in power electronics and electrical drives and those with experience in power electronics hardware prototype construction are preferred.

Other research activities may include participating in research collaboration with local collaborators (EPGC at Fusionpolis and Jurong Island, etc), local industries, overseas universities and writing reports as required by A*STAR.

Job Requirements:

  • Master/PhD degree with good honors in Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering (Students about to complete their Master degree will be considered too)
  • Fluent verbal and written communications in English
    Strong analytical and conceptual abilities
  • Able to work independently or in a team in the realization of the R&D work
  • Able to commit 1-2 years of your time in the project.

Entry level and starting salaries will depend on candidate's qualification and experience.
