Research Fellow
COSMIC is a research centre that involves researchers specializing in communities, design and technologies from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). The Centre aims to empower communities, specifically those in the informal economy who are typically underserved by existing technology vendors and telecom service providers through social media innovations that improve the way they live, work and play. The Centre intends to partner with Singapore/Indian and regional companies or spin-off companies to test and deploy technologies. Through the Centre, Singapore can become a pioneer in the creation of social media innovations for the big potential market presented in the informal economy. The Centre will also be training a number of research students at the masters, doctoral and post-doctoral levels who would specialize in different aspects of social media innovations. The Centre is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated candidate to conduct research and provide research support. The following are key areas which the applicant will be involved in:
Contribute to the whole research process including research conceptualization, carrying out literature searches, methodology formulation, data collection and analysis.
Co-ordination and collection of data, data entry/transcriptions (including field studies in Singapore and overseas),
Co-ordination of data analyses
Writing of reviews, research reports and academic papers.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
Essential
PhD degree in communication, psychology, social sciences, human factors, information studies or related field from a reputable university
Experience in completing research projects
Candidates with strong interdisciplinary research skills are particularly encouraged to apply
Competency in the following areas:
Qualitative and quantitative research methods – ability to carry out surveys, interviews, and experimental studies
Research writing to publishable standard
Preferred
Interest and research expertise in social media in a community development or health context
A team player in a project setting, also with ability to work independently in a multi-cultural team environment
Must demonstrate initiative and good interpersonal communication skills
Initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal to two more years based on performance. NTU may engage appointee to perform some supervisory and teaching duties during the tenure without affecting research deliverables. No additional remuneration for the secondary duties mentioned herein will be extended.

The following are key areas which the applicant will be involved in:
Set up and maintain the computing environment for research and development in conjunction with NUS and IITB.
Be part of the research team and primarily responsible to carry out various application and development work using mainly open source tools as dictated by the requirements of the projects.
Contribute to writing of research papers.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
• Bachelor or Master Degree in Information Systems/Computing Science/Computer Engineering or related areas
• Experience in web application, client/server development, web services, and web servers’ performance tuning
• Excellent programming and scripting knowledge (C/C++,Java, PHP, XML and SQL)
• Experience and/or familiarity with Google Android platform, Apple iOS and CentOS Linux environment
• Passionate in working with mobile applications
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work independently as well as cohesively as a team
• Strong background and proven track record in software development
