Faculty Position in Sound Design for Film and Animation

The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified academics to apply for a faculty position as Assistant Professor in Sound Design for Film and Animation.

Candidates with expertise in the following areas are encouraged to apply:

1) Extensive experience in mentoring of film and animation graduate and undergraduate students in the conceptualization, planning, execution, and presentation of sound for their projects. The candidate should be aware of contemporary trends as well as the historical developments in a range of professional and independent film and animation genres, and have working knowledge of both analog and digital processes, especially current advanced digital production equipment. Experience in overseeing of student production schedules and ability to work collegially with both faculty and technical staff is a requirement.

2) The candidate should have expertise in designing and teaching courses in best practices for sound recording for film and animation, including topics such as:

  • Microphone, pick patterns, microphone placement, sound isolation, production sound mixing, use of specific recording equipment, and ADR and Foley room recording technique;
  • Supervising and recording ADR/voice recording sessions for final year and thesis projects;
  • Providing individual coaching for voice actors and directors in ADR recording sessions;
  • Supervising student sound design preparation for final re-recording mixes;
  • Collecting, transfer, and reformatting of all audio design files between editing sessions and the re-recording mix stage;
  • Designing and conducting courses that include other important field specific processes, including milestones for film and animation post-production,   best practices in sound design technique, and communication with audio collaborators such as the composer and the re-recording mixer; and
  • Designing courses for Sound Design in Film and Animation

3) The candidate should also be able to evaluate guidelines and develop new documentation for best practices in the School of Art, Design and Media environment in collaboration with other faculty and technical staff.

ADM is the first comprehensive art school in Singapore. It offers a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, providing students the knowledge and skills needed to develop and produce groundbreaking artworks and related scholarly activity. ADM also promotes Singapore’s creative culture and identity, and is positioned to play a central role in the transformation of Singapore into a regional centre of media and creativity. Currently, six Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree programs are offered by ADM: Digital Filmmaking, Digital Animation, Digital Photography, Interactive Media, Visual Communication, and Product Design. A rigorous first-year Foundation program including Art History and Theory, paired with a traditional studio interdisciplinary experience and innovative development in new technology and media is common to all. The four-year programs are designed to be relevant regionally and globally, and are structured to meet the highest professional and academic standards worldwide. The School is developing new graduate programmes across all areas of the school. The PhD in Art, Design and Media with a focus on Animation will launch in August 2012. NTU provides excellent opportunities for funded faculty research, and excellent facilities for creative production.

The BFA in Digital Filmmaking Degree and the BFA in Animation Degree actively explore and integrate established narrative forms and new technologies for storytelling and experimentation. They focus on independent production in the cultural context of Southeast Asia, and foster individual authorship while contributing to the growth of the film and animation industries in Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia. The programmes embrace a strongly multicultural approach, and embrace emerging forms of filmmaking and animation made possible by digital technologies, such as visual effects and experimental documentary.

 Faculty Position in Product Design

The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified academics to apply for a faculty position as either Associate Professor or Full Professor. Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply:

1) 3D Form and Conceptual Design

Include topics such as: Semantics of form, shape, geometry, colour and texture in design, visualisation and design thinking.

2) User Centred Design

Include topics such as: Experience design, sustainability in design, design for special needs, responsible design.

3) Product Design in South East Asia

Include topics such as: Ethnic design, cultural influences, Asia design history, crafts based design, etc.

4) New Technologies

Include topics such as: Innovation and new product development, virtual product design and rapid prototyping, design for emerging technologies and hybrid physical ubiquitous computing, embedded systems, mobile media, interaction design, etc.

The BFA in Product Design is a four year programme. The objective of the programme is to produce designers who will emerge as leaders in the design of products: from “everyday” objects to complex industrial products. The programme embraces the principles of sustainable design and seeks to be relevant to the region in which it is situated as well as to uphold the highest of international standards.

Applicants should possess a strong background in professional product design as well as teaching on the undergraduate and post-graduate university levels, including mentoring of Final Year Projects and post-graduate theses. A strong research/creative profile is required. A terminal MFA or PhD degree is expected.

International applicants with a background in transdisciplinary and multicultural practice and research are encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research/creative production profile, as well as a commitment to teaching and to service in the form of administration and committee participation. An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school and university is a priority. The school has excellent facilities, and there are many opportunities for funded research.
