Earth Observatory of Singapore

Head of Division of Earth Sciences

Nanyang Technological University is seeking an earth scientist at the mid-career to senior level to lead the creation of its new Division of Earth Sciences (DES). The person selected for this position will also be appointed a professor and principal investigator, with opportunities for research and teaching. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated a broad interest in the earth sciences, with exceptional achievement in at least one discipline therein, and have a strong track record in teaching and administrative management.

As the founding head of DES, the successful candidate will play a leading role in Singapore’s efforts to design and build a broad-based, innovative, modern program of earth science research and teaching. Because the DES faculty will initially be made up largely of scientists at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), the responsibilities of this position include creating a supportive and stimulating academic environment for EOS faculty and graduate students.

NTU expects to expand the Division to encompass a broader range of the earth sciences, and the DES head will provide key guidance in developing an academic program with a scope beyond EOS’s focus on hazards-related science. As it grows, the new Division will increasingly emphasize disciplinary areas that can support the University’s aim of playing a significant role in global efforts to achieve sustainability.

To apply, please submit the following materials:

1. Curriculum Vitae
2. List of recent and forthcoming publications
3. Statement of research and teaching interests
4. Statement explaining your vision for the DES
5. The names of 4 references who are familiar with your work and would be willing to write an evaluation if so requested by our search committee.

Electronic submission of application is encouraged and can be forwarded to the following address: eos_humanresources@ntu.edu.sg

Deadline for application: 31 January 2010

Group Leader for Climate Research

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is seeking a climate scientist at the mid-career to senior level to lead our program of climate research. The successful candidate will have wide latitude and ample resources to lead EOS’s creation of a team of climate researchers, including several faculty positions.

Qualified applicants must demonstrate exceptional achievement in climate science, and a strong record of intellectual and managerial leadership. In particular, we seek a person who recognizes both the challenges of forecasting climate change at a regional level and the many opportunities for advancing knowledge about climate science in Southeast Asia.

EOS is an autonomous research institute at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), but the person selected for this position will also hold a tenured professorial position in the University’s new Division of Earth Sciences.

In addition to their own disciplinary research, climate scientists at EOS may choose to exploit opportunities to foster multi-disciplinary climate-related research through interactions with NTU’s faculties in electrical and computer engineering, volcanology, economics and risk management.

Singapore’s proximity to a major engine of global climate, the Western Pacific Warm Pool, as well as the Indian Ocean dipole, and the Southwest and East Asian Monsoon, offers an exciting environment for climate research.  With its strong commitment to becoming a significant location in Asia for scientific research, there is considerable financial and infrastructural support for basic science.

To apply, please submit the following materials:

1. Curriculum Vitae
2. List of most relevant publications
3. An essay explaining your view of the most important problems in climate science and your vision for climate research at EOS
4. The names of 4 references who are familiar with your work and would be willing to write an evaluation if so requested by the  search committee.

Electronic submission of application is encouraged and can be forwarded to the following address: eos_humanresources@ntu.edu.sg

Deadline for application: 31 January 2010
