Faculty Appointments in Structures & Mechanics

The Division of Structures and Mechanics invites applications for faculty appointments at the Assistant/Associate Professor levels in the following areas:

  • Computational Seismology

Candidates must have a PhD in geophysics or a related field in earth science and engineering with a proven record of excellence in research in computational seismology. The successful candidates must be capable of attracting research funding and demonstrate an ability to teach graduate level courses related to engineering seismology and/or computational seismology.

  • Earthquake Engineering

Candidates must have a PhD in structural engineering or a related field and a proven record of excellence in research. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: performance-based seismic design, global earthquake modeling, seismic damage and risk analyses, large-scale dynamic testing, seismic protective systems and others. The successful candidates must be capable of attracting funding in the relevant areas, and demonstrate an ability to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering.

  • Catastrophe Risk Modelling

Candidates must have a PhD in structural engineering or a related field and a proven record of excellence in research. Expertise in the following area is highly desirable: mathematical and probabilistic risk modeling of critical infrastructures due to both natural disasters and technical hazards. Knowledge in financial engineering for catastrophe risk financing, insurance and other management strategies would be an added advantage. Candidates with strong interdisciplinary focus are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidates must be capable of attracting research funding in the relevant areas, and demonstrate an ability to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses related to catastrophe risk modelling and analysis.

  • Sustainable Building Structure System

Candidates must have a PhD in structural engineering, sustainable construction materials, building engineering or related fields and a promising record of excellence in research. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: sustainable design and use of new/green materials in structural engineering with emphasis on Singapore’s high development density and tropical climate, energy efficient structural design and construction, green building design and operation, life-cycle models and analysis of building structure systems, simulation and modelling procedure for studying the interactions between building structure systems and the environment, sensor and information technologies for continuous state awareness of the building structure system, new construction, repair, and retrofits procedure for sustainable building structure systems. The successful candidate is expected to work independently and jointly with other faculty members to attract funding in the relevant areas of research, and demonstrate an ability to teach graduate and undergraduate level courses related to sustainable construction materials, building technology and building engineering.
