Copyright Policy
The material in the Media Resource Library is strictly for teaching purposes within the campus. Under no circumstances should borrowers duplicate, or reproduce portions of the material without the prior written consent of the copyright holder. It is the borrower's responsibility to obtain this consent.
The Copyright Act 1987 of Singapore gives to the authors of literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic works certain exclusive rights. These authors can prevent unauthorised use of their works and they can demand payment of a fee for granting the license or permission for the use of the protected material.
The types of works protected by copyright are literary programmes (including computer programs), dramatic, musical and artistic works, sound recordings, films, broadcasts, cable programmes and typographical arrangements of published editions.
Public Performance Right
Public performance right is usually given to literary, dramatic and musical works, with the exceptions for some types of materials. A public performance license must be obtained. The Composers and Authors Society of Singapore Ltd (COMPASS) administers such licenses on behalf of its members and members of foreign organizations with whom they have reciprocal arrangement. It is to be noted that more than one category of copyright interest may arise in the public performance of a work. The Copyright Tribunal has jurisdiction over the granting of public performance licenses and the terms and conditions of the licenses.
A small number of AV titles in the collection are given public performance rights. In general, these titles are licensed for public performance allowing the University to show copyrighted films without legal infringement. Notwithstanding this, users are advised to view the copyright and license notices included in the materials for additional conditions imposed by the copyright holders. Details are also provided in the Library Catalogue record where applicable.
Titles with public performance rights can be retrieved with a simple Library Catalogue search by typing "public performance rights" in "word(s)" field.
