Subject librarian responsibilities :
Develop library collection.
Select library materials for procurement or subscription.
Coordinate subject resources.
Provide instruction on literature searching and information skills training in subject areas.
Provide consultation and reference services for users who need assistance in sourcing for information or in using specific e-resources, update and promote the use of Chinese library blog, subject rooms, etc.
Coordinate and act as library liaison person to the Division of Chinese and other centres, such as MPA (Master of Public Administration) and MME (Master of Managerial Economics).
Work Experience :
Boon Nia went to UK to pursue her postgraduate degree in librarianship at the Liverpool Polytechnic, Liverpool in 1979. She came back to Singapore in 1980 to join the then Institute of Education Library as Head, Reference Department, and later Head of Circulation Department.
After 2 years, she joined Nanyang Technical Institute and worked as a cataloguer in Cataloguing Department. She headed the Cataloguing Department (renamed Bibliographic Services in July 2004) from 1984 to 2008. She was responsible for overseeing all cataloguing activities.
From 2009 to 2011, she headed the Chinese Library. She planned and strategized the development of the Chinese Library. Overseeing the management and operations of the Chinese Library, she ensured that good library facilities & services are available. Duties included the development of the library collection, provision of information competency training and rolling out of reference services. At the same time, she also oversaw the Wang Gungwu Library project.
In September 2011, she stepped down as Head of Chinese Library, NTU.
She was proud to be a part of one of the best libraries in Singapore and one of the most prestigious universities in the region for nearly 30 years. She will still be connected to the institution in her new role as a Chinese Studies Librarian (Chinese Overseas) on a part-time basis for one year.
